Now, countless surfers who get a taste for shooting photos in the surf (often via an introduction using a small waterproof POV camera; say hello to the Go-Pro generation) are able to get out and shoot incredible imagery to upload to Instagram. We shoot a lot of photography and footage at the Surf Simply coaching resort in Costa Rica; at any one time there are three coaches filming from the beach and there are usually two photographers and a videographer swimming around capturing in-water footage.
Now when shooting surf action and you want to freeze the action then I would suggest a shutter speed set at 1/800th of second or higher. If it’s super bright and sunny go up to 1/2000th of a second to really freeze that action and get those water drops nice and crisp. This is for freezing the action of course and getting a super sharp photo and most of the time this is what the action photographer is searching for.
Plus, no one hides the secret surf spots from me anymore! 😄 ... You don’t need expensive kit to take amazing photos. Just get out there and practice. Always be nice to the people you photograph and be willing to talk to people in the water while you shoot.
