The weeklong celebration in Encinitas kicks off with a Seaside Beach takeover event on Sept. 13 featuring DJ sets, live music, surf contests for men, women, and groms, and a battle on the water between firefighters and lifeguards.

The US Open of Surfing is the world's largest surf competition. This event has been hosted in Huntington Beach every year since 1959, largely because of the location's consistent waves and wide-open beaches.

Surf competitions are typically organized into heats – short surfing sessions where a small group of surfers competes simultaneously. Each heat lasts about 20 to 30 minutes, during which each surfer tries to catch as many waves as possible.

Participants range in age from 8 years old to the late 80’s. The three signature events for the festival are the Judge Taplin Lifeguard Medley Relay, the Dwight Crum Pier-to-Pier Swim, and the Charlie Saikley 6-Man Volleyball Tournament. Other great events include a surfing contest, bodysurfing contest, beach run, paddleboard races, dory race, and youth events.
